When I was eight years old, my grandmother died. Part of my mother’s inheritance was a fox fur stole. It was made from three foxes that were held around the neck by little springs that occupied the place where a jaw once was. Being, that kind of boy, I could not wait to try it on. It was the most glamorous thing I could imagine and I looked forward to seeing my mother wear it. I imagined us together in line at the grocery store and the admiring throngs that would look our way. I couldn’t think of any reason she wouldn’t wear it everywhere she went, but as time passed, I was puzzled by the fact that I seemed to be the only one interested in taking it out of the box it came it.
A few years ago while staying in a small cabin with my brother and his wife, we looked out our window and saw two foxes chasing each other around in the snow. I remembered my mother’s stole and thought about the foxes it was made from.
Hand Bag is for the foxes that gave their life for that unworn fur stole.
